So.....I'm on my way up to Sebastopol to  study the work of Archeologist Marija Gimbutas with my teacher Joan. I've been turned on to the Neolithic art that was illuminated by Gimbutas' intense scholarship, which appears to depict the sacredness of the female body. Symbols on the artifacts include sublime swirls, meandering chevrons and pelvic triangles. The study of this art is part of my graduate work.

So...I was gettin' some coffee for the drive up and who do I see, laying on her side, dumped like some firewood in the concrete parking structure, but this huge African Female wood carving.

So...after my mouth closed and the hair on back of my neck stopped feeling like needles, I lifted her from the concrete and laid her in the back of my van. We drove up together to see Joan.

So...after Joan's mouth closed and the hair on the back of her neck stopped feeling like needles, we agreed that the carving should remain there.

So...that's where she is now, hanging out in Joan's temple so she can laugh at us and overlook our work. I guess she needed a ride.

We are calling her Mawu and she seems to have a life, and agenda of her own. She is carved from a light colored wood and is very ornately detailed. Any information about her cultural or historical background would be greatly appreciated.  Blessings to our oldest Ancestors. For a closer look click on the photos. -esikie
